Monday 18th July 2011

Yesterday -Sunday - we all went to the Abbey for the morning service which was a mixture of song, music and worship. All very different to what we are used to. We met many different people from all over the world.

After a delicious lunch we set off at about 2.00pm for the '|Bay at the Back of the Ocean'. It started off slightly damp! and as we were going along started to rain. No one wanted to turn back so we persevered onwards. We arrived at the beach and many pebbles and stones were collected and a small cairn built. It begn to rain a bit heavier, some hardier members of the group went on to Port Ban whilst the rest went off in groups back to Bishop's House. By the time we reached home the word drowned rats could be used for all of us.

The rest of the afternoon was spent reading, snoozing ( I won't say who!) and drinking cups of tea and eating chocolate cake.

The day was rounded off with a nice roast meal followed by Evensong. By then it had dried up and a few people went out to get some more fresh air. All the radiators were covered with damp clothes!

Today - Monday - dawned bright and sunny. We slowly wound our way to the abbey where we looked at John Smith's grave before having a guided tour of the main parts of the building. It was glorious as we looked out over the sound and saw a pod of either dolphins, whales or .....?

After a lunch we set off for the North Shore - some in shorts and all sporting a variety of sun hats. During the afternoon some were seen fishing, others were paddling, some sitting on rocks , some eating and one person dozing in the sun. The sky was blue and the sea a multitude of shades of aquamarine. This was indeed Iona at it's best.

Folk are gradually winding their way back to Bishop's House for the evening meal. The barbeque bought to cook the fish on is still in it's wrapper!!!!!!!!!!!!

We look forward to a glorious evening and a good day tomorrow when Joyce Watson leads us on our pilgrimage walk.

View of the port of Oban

Only one day to go and then we are off. Still lots to do. I have been talking with fellow travellers tonight and they are all looking forward to the trip. I still can't decide what to pack. I've got a very long list!

Monday 11th July

Still a few days to go, which is probably just as well as I'm not packed yet!  We have been thinking about the services at Bishop's House today.

Busy looking out waterproof coat, waterproof hat, waterproof scarf, waterproof gloves and waterproof haversack  and not forgetting waterproof trousers. The theory is you never take what you really need so if we take it all hopefully we won't need it.

I wonder who will have the biggest case? Any guesses?
